More Information

  • History/Legend of the Temple According to the folklore surrounding Kumbeswarar Temple, the town of Kumbakonam got its name. It is said that Brahma created the pot (kumbha), which held the seed of all life on Earth. It is thought that Shiva's arrow caused a pralaya, or dissolution of the world, which dislocated the kumbha, which finally rested where the town of Kumbakonam now exists. It is thought that the Mahamaham tank and the Potramarai tank are the two locations where the nectar fell. Now, every twelve years, the Mahamaham festival honors this occasion. Kudamukku, a Tamil name, was another name for Kumbakonam. The Sangam-era hamlet of Kudavayil is also associated with Kumbakonam.
