Varahaperumal Temple, located in Thanjavur district of Kumbakonam, is a prominent Hindu temple devoted to Lord Vishnu. The shrine, located directly behind the Chakrapani temple, dates back to the Varaha Avatar period, hence the name Varahaperumal. Lord Vishnu’s consort is venerated as Bhoodevi Thayyar, and she is said to answer petitions for land and property issues.

  • History/Legend of the Temple Two Dwarapalakas named Jayan and Vijayan formerly fortified Lord Narayana's home in VaiKundam. Inflicting a curse caused them to be born as Hiranyaksha and Hiranyakashipu on Earth. As Hiranyaksha, he abducted the earth and imprisoned it in the underworld. When the devotees begged Vishnu, the Lord appeared as Varaha (boar) and disappeared underground. He crushed the Asura and restored the earth (Bhoodevi). Varaha Moorthy is the principal deity at Adhi Varaha Perumal Temple. While the Moolavar sits, the Utsavar stands, with his left foot on Adhisesha. The Goddess is performing darshan as Ambuja Valli in a different shrine. Another noteworthy altar is that of Shri Santhanakrishnan in his youthful form. The Pushkarini is referred to as Varaha Kulam. It is supposed that Sage Kashyapar took a holy bath and saw the Lord here. The Neiveidhyam available here is made of Korai Kizhangu.
